Chester zoo

Character Animation Production

Away day rules – Rules for schools

Chester zoo is the UK’s largest zoo and the most-visited, paid for visitor attraction outside London. It’s a worldwide conservation organisation with projects all over the world. And their mission is to prevent extinction. It’s also right on our doorstep, so we jumped about like Quokkas at the chance to create a video production for them!

The zoo welcomes over 100,000 school children and students to the zoo on educational visits each year and it is a great opportunity to inspire the next generation of conservationists.

The zoo is a fantastic educational resource, with lots of learning opportunities available throughout their visit, as well as providing a fun and memorable school trip.

Chester zoo required this video production to provide students and teachers ‘tips and techniques’ that show how to get the most out of a visit to Chester zoo. Showing how to behave whilst visiting the zoo, so everyone can have an enjoyable day and discover the different learning opportunities available.

Animation Filming Motion Design

Live-action, animation mash-up

This video is a live action and animation mash-up which is promoted across schools throughout the UK; giving pupils the lowdown on appropriate behaviour while at the zoo.

The script was written by our Creative Director, Stewart and tested out on a mixed age, focus group of school pupils. This provided great feedback and allowed us to ensure the video was appropriate for the audience and avoided being #LAME. Turns out no-one under 16 uses the word ‘legit’ anymore!

Live action scenes were shot by Olivia on location at off-peak times, allowing the zoo to be clear of visitors. Animator, Matt designed a full cast of characters including: school pupils, zoo rangers and teachers. Characters were created to fit within Chester zoo’s playful brand featuring wiggly hand-drawn lines and bright colours. After a few tweaks and reworks they were ready to be animated and brought to life in Adobe AE.

All footage and text was edited and graded by Olivia with animated character overlays provided by Matt. At all points of the project the whole team aimed to keep the vibe of the video engaging, colourful and fun.

For this, audio and tone was extremely important. Voiceover artist, presenter and actor, Kyle Walker, brought a dynamic energy to the script and it was great to work with him again: having previously worked together on our Manchester City Kids App project.

Junior Editor, Ingrid, tied the footage together with an energising mix of music and those all important animal sound effects.

This project was a great opportunity to both work with such a well established and nationally loved attraction while creating fun, yet important content for a younger audience.
